After installing the OS (if you want to re-install but don’t have an installation CD go here) you should quickly install some security before doing anything else. AVG Anti-Virus Free is an excellent free virus protection software. It has some limitations but provides the essential security features you need in the beginning. And because it is very reliable in performing its tasks it is a great free option.
Some benefits of AVG are:
- Good malware detection
- Integrated Web security
- Automatic security updates
- Option to create an emergency CD
Details about AVG Anti-Virus Free
Even though there are a lot of other good options available (we will provide some of them in later posts) we recommend AVG. This is because we never came across any major issues. And second, AVG always ends up among the best free virus scanners. However, we don’t want to hide that AVG Anti-Virus Free comes with a lot of ads for the paid versions. But if you don’t mind this little issue you get great virus protection for free.
AVG gives you the option to scan your entire hard drive or just individual files, folders, or archives for viruses or spyware. Removable media can be scanned as well. Real-time protection provides security against acute threats. However, you need to be aware that there is no protection against phishing, keyloggers, and hacker attacks. And a firewall is only available with one of the paid products (but Windows comes with a Firewall and there are also other free Firewall options available). As for other free software, there is also no support available.
Even though this free version is fully functional for private use you should have a look at the AVG website to make sure you know all the benefits but also all the disadvantages.
Note: During installation, please select the basic version to receive the free version of AVG. It is recommended to disable all other options.
