If you like social networking then Facebook is still the best choice. You might think that after the last negative news it would be better to avoid this social network and look somewhere else. And it is, of course, true that allowing 3rd parties to access millions of users’ data was a bad move. And you have every right to be upset about such a breach of trust.
However, Facebook is still by far the biggest social network with well over 1 billion active users. And if you want to connect to friends, colleagues, or family members then Facebook is your best bet. Creating an account is easy and there are many nice features to work with. Post your favorite pictures, tell everyone in your list the news in your life, or just read what others have to say. There are also many groups to follow. Interested in science fiction, or real science, or music? There are groups for almost everything. And should you be interested in something that doesn’t have a group yet then simply create one yourself.
Facebook for Business
There is of course also the option to use Facebook for business. Many companies run their own Facebook Page with information about hiring and other opportunities. On the other end, you can create your own business page, promote your business, and offer your services or products. You can see my business page for Translation Services here as an example.
If you want to promote your business you can just write about it and hope that people will find you and your business. But if you are willing to spend some money you can create ads through Facebook which will then be shown to an audience that fits your goals. Setting up the ads works similarly to Google Ads.
Safety is important
You should never forget about this little thing called safety. You can do a lot through Facebook, but be careful about invitations, posted links, and downloads. For links and downloads, the same precautions are needed that you should put in place for spam through email or for malicious websites. Make sure you have a decent virus scanner installed. And read this information from Facebook itself for some helpful privacy settings.
There is one more thing I would like to say. It is always easy to blame someone else for your troubles. But you should not forget that you are responsible for the information you post. Think about your favorite bar where you know a lot of people. You are not going to tell everyone you know there your credit card number and pin, right? Same for Facebook. Don’t post passwords, credit card numbers, etc. If you do, you are to blame.
