Greenshot is a great screenshot tool, that’s for sure. True, you might say, but why do I need a screenshot tool? Windows is already capable of taking screenshots. Just press PrtScn (a key on your keyboard), and Windows will save a full screenshot to the clipboard. You can then paste that screenshot into any application and edit it.

Another option is to press Windows+Shift+S to take a screenshot with the Snipping tool from Windows. This tool lets you take screenshots of the full screen, a rectangular area, a freehand area, or a window. After you created the screenshot, you can edit it.. a little. More than highlighting, erasing, using a pencil or ball pen (the software equivalent of it) to draw, or touch writing (if you have a touch-screen) is not possible. There are no shapes, no text boxes to type a text using the keyboard (I wonder what I have a keyboard for), no arrows, etc. And, at least on my computer, the Snipping tool sometimes freezes for a while.

And here comes Greenshot

Greenshot is a light application. It is located among the other tools in the hidden icons section in the taskbar when started. A click on the icon opens a context menu. You can now choose to capture a (rectangular) region, a window, or the entire screen. You can also capture the exact same area you captured before again if you need a series of pictures from the same region.

Once the screenshot is taken, you can edit or save it.

The image editor provided by Greenshot offers all the essential features you need. You can draw rectangles, ellipses, lines, arrows, and freehand. In addition, you can create text boxes, speech bubbles, and counters. And then, there are features to highlight, obfuscate, apply effects, crop, apply torn edges, etc.

Your options for saving are to save to the clipboard, save to a folder, or save to various applications, such as Paint, Paint.Net, Word, Excel, and others. You can also upload to Imgur, an online image-sharing community and image host, if you want to share your screenshots with others. And you could print your screenshot.

One thing Greenshot doesn’t do is integrate with browsers to take screenshots of a complete webpage. However, this is not a big deal because browsers like Firefox already provide this feature.

Conclusion

Greenshot is a small but excellent screenshot tool that delivers all essential features.
